gdf8 (growth and differentiation factor 8), also known as myostatin, is a member of the TGF-beta family of growth factors and functions as a negative regulator of muscle growth. Loss-of-function mutations in gdf8 have been shown to result in increased skeletal muscle mass in mice, cattle, and humans.
