eIF-2alpha is the alpha subunit of the eukaryotic initiation factor 2. The EIF2 forms a ternary complex with GTP and initiator Met-tRNAi and is responsible for the binding of initiator Met-tRNAi and mRNA to 40S ribosomes for protein synthesis. Alternate names for eIF2 include eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit 1, eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit alpha, EIF-2 alpha, EIF-2A, and EIF2S1
