Transcription elongation factor B polypeptide 3 (TCEB3), also known as Elongin A, was identified as a factor that could increase the catalytic rate of Pol II transcription elongation. Transcription elongation is one step in the multistage process of transcription that involves the polymerization of nucleoside monophosphates into a ribonucleotide transcript catalyzed by Pol II. Successful elongation requires factors that promote sufficient elongation rates and processivity. TCEB3 or Elongin A is part of a heterotrimeric complex, Elongin (SIII) that includes Elongin A, B, and C and facilitates transcription elongation by suppressing transient pausing by Pol II.
