The transcription of RNA is a multi-stage process catalyzed by the multisubunit complex RNA Polymerase II (RNA Pol II) that involves the polymerization of nucleoside monophosphates into a ribonucleotide transcript from a DNA template. The RNA Pol II core complex is composed of 12 subunits (Rpb1-Rbp12). Rpb2 is proposed to form the enzyme’s catalytic center and function to maintain contact in the active site of the enzyme between the DNA template and the newly synthesized RNA.
