The conjugation of ubiquitin to proteins is an important means to regulate protein activity for many cellular processes by tagging them for degradation. Lasu1/Ureb1 is an E3 ubiquitin protein ligase that mediates the ubiquitination of core histones, Mcl-1, Cdc6, and p53. Lasu1/Ureb1 expression is regulated during spermatogenesis and appears to play a role in chromatin modification in germ cells as well as other tissues. Alternate names for Lasu/Ureb1 include E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase HUWE1, HECT UBA and WWE domain-containing protein, URE-B1, Mcl-1 ubiquitin ligase E3, mule, ARF-binding protein 1, ARF-BP1, KIAA0312, KIAA1578, HSPC272, and RP3339A18.4.
