High mobility group protein 2a (HMG2a) is a member of the Hmg-box subfamily of proteins that possesses a DNA-binding HmG-box domain. The HMG2a gene is X-linked and its expression is localized to the bone marrow and is a marker for hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). HMG2a plays a role in cell-fate decisions of HSCs and functions by altering DNA structure to facilitate transcription factor binding.
