Bcl-xL is part of the BCL-2 family of proteins that regulates apoptosis and cell cycle control. Bcl-xL is the protein product of the larger alternatively spliced isoform of Bcl-x. Bcl-xL functions similarly to BCL2 in promoting cell survival and inhibiting proliferation by promoting G0 arrest. Bcl-xL is located in the outer mitochondrial membrane and promotes cell survival by preventing mitochondrial release of cytochrome c and caspase activation in response to apoptotic signals.
